Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates
|
Featured pictures are images that add significantly to articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or being eye-catching to the point where users will want to read its accompanying article. Taking the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words", the images featured on Wikipedia:Featured pictures should illustrate a Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article, according to the featured picture criteria.
If you believe an image should be featured, create a subpage (use the "For Nominations" field, below) and add the subpage to the current nominations section. For promotion, if an image is listed here for ten days with five or more reviewers in support and the consensus is in its favor, it can be added to the Wikipedia:Featured pictures list. Consensus is generally regarded to be a two-thirds majority in support, including the nominator and/or creator of the image; however, anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. All users may comment. However, only those who have been registered on the English Wikipedia for 25 days and with at least 100 edits will be included in the numerical count. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis. Nominations started in December are given three extra days, due to the holidays slowing down activity here. The archive contains all opinions and comments collected for candidate nominations and their nomination results. If you nominate an image here, please consider also uploading and nominating it at Commons to help ensure that the pictures can be used not just in the English Wikipedia but on all other Wikimedia projects as well.
A featured picture can be nominated for delisting if you feel it no longer lives up to featured picture standards. You may also request a featured picture be replaced with a superior image. Create a subpage (use the "For Delists" field, below) and add the subpage to the current nominations section. Please leave a note on the talk page of the original FPC nominator (and creator/uploader, if appropriate) to let them know the delisting is being debated. The user may be able to address the issues and avoid the delisting of the picture. For delisting, if an image is listed here for ten days with five or more reviewers supporting a delist or replace, and the consensus is in its favor, it will be delisted from Wikipedia:Featured pictures. Consensus is generally regarded to be a two-thirds majority in support, including the nominator. Note that anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. However, images are sometimes delisted despite having fewer than five in support of their removal, and there is currently no consensus on how best to handle delist closures, except for one point: If the image to be delisted is not used in any articles by the time of closure, it must be delisted. If it is added to articles during the nomination, at least one week's stability is required for the nomination to be closed as "Kept". The nomination may be suspended if a week hasn't yet passed to give the rescue a chance. Outside of the nominator, all voters are expected to have been on Wikipedia for 25 days and to have made a minimum of 100 edits. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis. As with regular nominations, delist nominations are given three extra days to run if started in December.

Is my monitor adjusted correctly? In a discussion about the brightness of an image, it is necessary to know if the computer display is properly adjusted. Displays differ greatly in their ability to show shadow detail. There are four dark grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display shadow detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings. Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal shadow detail. Please take this into account when voting. Displays also differ greatly in their ability to show highlight detail. There are light grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display highlight detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings (probably reduce the contrast setting). Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal highlight detail. Please take this into account when voting. ![]() On a gamma-adjusted display, the four circles in the color image blend into the background when seen from a few feet (roughly 75–150 cm) away. If they do not, you could adjust the gamma setting (found in the computer's settings, not on the display), until they do. This may be very difficult to attain, and a slight error is not detrimental. Uncorrected PC displays usually show the circles darker than the background. Note that the image must be viewed in original size (263 × 68 pixels) - if enlarged or reduced, results are not accurate. Note that on most consumer LCD displays (laptop or flat screen), viewing angle strongly affects these images. Correct adjustment on one part of the screen might be incorrect on another part for a stationary head position. Click on the images for more technical information. If possible, calibration with a hardware monitor calibrator is recommended. |

Weakoppose — The composition is good but the harsh shadows detract from the presentation. Moonreach (talk) 14:34, 13 May 2026 (UTC)- Hi Moonreach, I have lightened the shadows. Do keep in mind that, due to the site's location at an intersection, the street lamp and its shadow cannot be avoided when photographing the front facade. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 15:24, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
- I'll be honest, it looks almost exactly the same on my monitor. Checking the old versions for comparison, I also noticed that you removed some shirts from the original version of the photo. I've had enough conversations with photographers to know these things are subjective, but to me, that's excessive digital manipulation. It changes the contents of the photo, rather than correcting flaws (like scratch removal) or tuning existing photographic properties (like shadow reduction). Also, was it done automatically by software? There are places that I can see through the pickets in the original but can't on the edited version. I oppose. Moonreach (talk) 19:20, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
- The shirts had copyrighted designs on them, which ideally should have been removed (they were de minimis, but still). That is entirely within policy, and documented; I could be like other photographers and not document that at all. As for the shadows, you do have to refresh your cache. The shadows were increased by a universal 25 and exposure by 0.4 on the street light and traffic sign shadows. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 19:43, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose Main reason: the direction of the train(s) is not clear in the picture. There are commuter trains whose fronts look just like their backs. Worse, these trains look right-sided to me! Secondary reason: I don't see anything notable about the picture itself. It may illustrate the article well, but the picture doesn't seem special. Minor complaint: The caption is wrong; right and left are reversed. - Zaslav (talk) 23:29, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- In the UK at least, white lights mean front and red lights mean back on both cars and trains. As you can see, the train is heading towards the photographer because its lights are white. If you look at the electrification above, you can see that there is one space to the left of where this train is. Therefore, we know that it is on the second track along. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that it's left-hand running (see Quadruple-track railway#Layouts). It is only necessarily left-hand running if the track is quadrupled by speed. - Reason
- I think this is a very historically important and beautiful painting. It depicts a broad-gauge GWR train crossing the Maidenhead Railway Bridge. Brunel's design of the bridge was deemed impossible and after structural defects was left with scaffolding on it, a seemingly humiliating defeat for him. However, the scaffolding was in fact unnecessary, and one night it blew away in a storm, revealing the "impossible" bridge flawlessly executed behind it. J. M. W. Turner, known for his beautiful but almost violent watercolour paintings, depicts the balance and contrast between the engineering marvel and industrial powerhouse of the Great Western Railway and its powerful broad gauge locomotives against the beauty of the bridge and this section of the River Thames. The picture was nominated for FP in October 2012, and while people were supportive, there were colouring issues. I personally have no preference as to which of the various files are used, but the one I have selected here is the finest in my opinion in colour and quality. A photo of the paintng in its frame may also be helpful in this respect. I also think that the two currently-used images should have one chosen for usage on enwikipedia for consistency.

- Oppose For EV should feature in Church of Saint Sava article, but daytime images of the church and/or monument have more EV. Nothing wrong with the image from an artistic perspective, just EV. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:26, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose: I think the framing detracts from the EV of the image here. The church is only in one half and the shadows on the base of the statue and below are a bit awkward too, as is the glare/reflection of the lights. I do like the concept though and it would have high artistic value in daytime. JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 20:30, 9 May 2026 (UTC)

- Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, turns out to be one of the most photogenic and surreal places on Earth. During the dry season, the flat is a wasteland made of white hexagons; during the wet season, it forms a shallow layer of brine that serves as an enormous mirror. We already have a featured picture from this location (reproduced below), and I propose to add three more, the third of which (the Toyota Land Cruiser) is already a featured picture on Commons. The article itself is filled with many more incredible photos, although sadly they are below the resolution cutoffs on one or both axes.

- Oppose Not a set in my opinion, esepecially with the Toyota promo picture. And I don't think an image should be featured twice. Charlesjsharp (talk) 12:04, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
- Is it a rule that the same person/organization needs to make all the images? I didn't see it anywhere. In terms of subject matter, I think these are a set. Moonreach (talk) 13:38, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

- I can't find any rules on what makes up a set. There are guidelines on Commons, but that's not relevant here. I've added to my oppose vote. Charlesjsharp (talk) 14:58, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- Okay, that makes sense. If it makes a difference, I'm not proposing to feature the salt-piles photo twice, but simply to group it with the others in the set. Moonreach (talk) 19:30, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- OK, I understand; though the salt piles would have had more chance of forming a set than the car! Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:01, 9 May 2026 (UTC)

- Comment - Definitely agree with Charles about the set. I'd probably be happy with File:20170809 Bolivia 1521 Uyuni sRGB (37926739616).jpg on its own, as it shows something different than the salt piles. - One of the more famous pictures to have come out of the 1947 Roswell incident, this photograph purports to show the wreckage of the UFO recovered by the military outside of Roswell New Mexico. Its often sited, along side the newspaper headline, as part of the history of the event, and as such is a well known photograph to Americans and UFO researchers.

Nominations — to be closed
[edit]Nominations in this category are older than ten days and are to be closed. New votes will no longer be accepted.
Older nominations requiring additional input from users
[edit]These nominations have been moved here because consensus is impossible to determine without additional input from those who participated in the discussion. Usually this is because there was more than one edit of the image available, and no clear preference for one of them was determined. If you voted on these images previously, please update your vote to specify which edit(s) you are supporting.
Closing procedure
[edit]A script is available that automates the majority of these tasks: User:Armbrust/closeFPC.js
When NOT promoted, perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Not promoted| }} --~~~~- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- If the nominator is new to FPC, consider placing
{{subst:NotpromotedFPC|Image name}}on their talk page. To avoid overuse, do not use the template when in doubt.
When promoted, perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Promoted|File:FILENAME.JPG}} --~~~~- Replace FILENAME.JPG with the name of the file that was promoted. It should show up as:
- Promoted File:FILENAME.JPG
- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Add the image to:
- Template:Announcements/New featured content - newest on top, remove the oldest so that 15 are listed at all times.
- Wikipedia:Goings-on - newest on bottom.
- Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs - newest on top.
- Add the image to the proper sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures - newest on top.
- The caption for a Wikipedian created image should read "Description at Article, by Creator". For a non-Wikipedian, it should be similar, but if the creator does not have an article, use an external link if appropriate. For images with substantial editing by one or more Wikipedians, but created by someone else, use "Description at Article, by Creator (edited by Editor)" (all editors involved should be clear from the nomination). Additionally, the description is optional - if it's essentially the same as the article title, then just use "Article, by Creator". Numerous examples can be found on the various Featured Pictures subpages.
- Add the image to the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures - newest on left and remove the oldest from the right so that there are always three in each section.
- Add the Featured Picture tag and star to the image page using {{Featured picture|page_name}} (replace page_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the page_name from Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/page_name). To add this template you most likely will have to click the "create" button on the upper right if the "edit" button is not present, generally if the image originates from Commons.
- If an edited or alternative version of the originally nominated image is promoted, make sure that all articles contain the Featured Picture version, as opposed to the original.
- Notify the nominator or co-nominators by placing {{subst:PromotedFPC|File:file_name.xxx}} on each nominator's talk page. For example: {{subst:PromotedFPC|File:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}.
- If the image was created by a Wikipedian, place {{subst:UploadedFP|File:file_name.xxx}} on the creator's talk page. For example: {{subst:UploadedFP|File:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}.
Then perform the following, regardless of the outcome:
- Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for three days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Page name}}to the top of the section. - Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the May archive. This is done by simply adding the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Page name}}from this page to the bottom of the archive. - If the nomination is listed at Template:FPC urgents, remove it.
Delist closing procedure
[edit]Note that delisting an image does not equal deleting it. Delisting from Featured pictures in no way affects the image's status in its article/s.
If consensus is to KEEP featured picture status, and the image is used in at least one article, perform the following:
- Check that the image has been in the article for at least one week. Otherwise, suspend the nomination to give it time to stabilize before continuing.
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Kept|}} --~~~~- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Optionally leave a note on the picture's talk page.
If consensus is to DELIST, or the image is unused (and consensus is not for a replacement that is used), perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Delisted|}} --~~~~- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Replace the
{{Featured picture}}tag from the image with{{FormerFeaturedPicture|delist/''Image name''}}. - Remove the image from the appropriate sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures and the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs.
If consensus is to REPLACE (and at least one of the images is used in articles), perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Replaced|}} with File:NEW_IMAGE_FILENAME.JPG --~~~~- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Replace NEW_IMAGE_FILENAME.JPG with the name of the replacement file.
- Replace the
{{Featured picture}}tag from the delisted image with{{FormerFeaturedPicture|delist/''Image name''}}. - Update the replacement picture's tag, adding the tag {{Featured picture|delist/image_name}} (replace image_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the image_name from Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/delist/image_name). Remove any no longer applicable tags from the original, replacement and from any other alternatives. If the alternatives were on Commons and no longer have any tags, be sure to tag the description page with {{missing image}}.
- Replace the delisted Featured Picture in all articles with the new replacement Featured Picture version. Do NOT replace the original in non-article space, such as Talk Pages, FPC nominations, archives, etc.
- Ensure that the replacement image is included on the appropriate sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures and the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs. Do this by replacing the original image with the new replacement image; do not add the replacement as a new Featured Picture.
Then perform the following, regardless of the outcome:
- Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for three days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Image name}}to the top of the section. - Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the archived delist nominations. This is done by simply adding the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Image name}}to the bottom of the appropriate section of the archive. - If the nomination is listed at Template:FPC urgents, remove it.

- EV. Obviously low quality, but this is literally the only footage of the Pentagon attack on 9/11. The original source from 2006 (HistoryCommons.org) is no longer active, so Wikimedia Commons would now appear to be the primary online source for this video. However I don't think that depreciates its verifiability.

- Oppose Historically very relevant, but plane is only in one blurred frame. Too poor quality. Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:30, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- Those are fair points. Honest question: on this subject, is there a particular image of the pentagon attack that stands out to you? If so, it may be in JJARichardson's interest to consider your suggestion for the FPC spot instead. TomStar81 (Talk) TomStar81 (Talk) 09:46, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- It is poor quality, but if it didn't exist we'd have literally no footage of the Pentagon strike on 9/11. JJARichardson (talk) 12:41, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

- Support – for EV value, even though the plane is only in a few frames, this is one of the only views of the Pentagon on 9/11 that we have. Wish the video went longer so we could start to see first aid response EMS and other first responders, but it is what it is. Northern-Virginia-Photographer (talk) 11:19, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose. I've always kind of felt the Featured Picture resolution limits are arbitrary, and so in general I'm happy to bend them, but there has to be a lower limit somewhere, and for me this is below it. The video's resolution and frame rate are so low that I honestly don't think it adds any genuine encyclopedic value. To me, "EV" has always meant "this piece of media tells you something a block of text can't," and this video is so blurry and so choppy that I don't think it tells the viewer anything. I do agree that it's interesting that we have this at all, but I don't see any value besides that "huh" factor. – Moonreach (talk) 15:45, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose I have to agree with Moonreach. Despite the incredibly high significance of what this footage covers, the quality is so poor that it does not provide a high degree of EV. Nick-D (talk) 08:34, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

- High quality large image. High EV. FP on Commons. I put it on Wiki article replacing a lower quality zoo picture in the infobox, but my edit was reverted. Please see discussion on previous nomination

- The image is 2,250 × 1,342 which is a little below minimum, but it is a historically significant (and imo artistically brilliant) painting. It depicts Ganga Singh receiving the Order of the Star of India from King George V. Singh was an incredibly important historical figure, and the investiture represents the might of the British Empire merely 3 years before the beginning of WWI would start its decline. It is also a brilliant demonstration of Jacomb-Hood's artistry.

- Oppose - Great picture, but low resolution. Need a new upload. Charlesjsharp (talk) 19:14, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- Not sure a higher resolution is available. I have looked everywhere online and the same 2,250 × 1,342 comes up. Will have to have another look. JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 19:44, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- Support. While a higher-resolution copy would be preferrable, if this is the best digital copy currently available after rigorous searching, I think an exception is okay. I believe the image meets all the other criteria, and in any case we can always do a D&R later. – Moonreach (talk) 15:49, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

- Comment Extremely high EV, obviously, but I'm doubtful of the claim that this is out of copyright in the US given that the source cited on Commons is a random Ebay listing for LPs of the album. As the image was a commercial shot for the album and was used as its cover, a much better source seems necessary. Nick-D (talk) 22:35, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- No deletion discussions so far (somehow), but image appeared to pass the Commons FA nom without anybody raising doubts about the PD status. If you personally have serious doubts it may be worth considering nominating for deletion. ―Howard • 🌽33 18:01, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Even within that listing, I don't see anything that says this image is out of copyright. Moonreach (talk) 19:53, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Moonreach: the rationale is that since the US publication of the cover was simultaneous with the UK publication, and the US cover did not bear a valid separate copyright notice for the cover, it is in the public domain in the US. ―Howard • 🌽33 23:44, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- I don't have any direct evidence to the contrary,
so I won't vote against it,but on a gut level I feel like this fails WP:SNOWBALL. I can't seriously believe that one of the most famous images connected to the most famous rock band was accidentally published without copyright. The problem is that I don't know what the image's official name was at the time it was taken, or who the copyright would have gone to (the photographer, the album designer, the record label, the producer?) which precludes me from looking it up in the copyright records. As a picture from 1969, it wouldn't have been subject to the 27-year renewal, which means any records (if they exist) would be in hard-to-search book records. Moonreach (talk) 22:52, 1 March 2026 (UTC)- Yes, that's also my concern here. The image may well be out of copyright in the US due to a stuff up by the record company or whoever originally owned the photo, but this needs to be properly established. Relying on a single Ebay listing as the source for being out of copyright doesn't seem OK for FP status. For instance, how can we be sure that the image hasn't been edited to remove the copyright notice?, how do we know for sure that it's actually a US edition of the album?, etc. Nick-D (talk) 23:48, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- Like I said, if you either of you have concerns regarding copyright, you should nominate the image for deletion as there doesn't appear to have been a previous deletion nomination. ―Howard • 🌽33 14:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- I have concerns but I can't think of a way to verify them, short of Wikipedia getting a cease-and-desist order. I don't like that the permission is still an eBay listing; even if that were a trustworthy resource, which it's not, I couldn't find anything on there that said "the cover of Abbey Road is public domain." Additionally, the copyright tags that have been added since this nomination was made conflict with each other. One says copyright was in South Africa first, another says that it was in the UK and South Africa simultaneously. All of this feels dubious to me, I just don't think I can meet the burden of proof for a deletion nomination. Moonreach (talk) 21:31, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- For what its worth, on Commons the burden of proof for keeping a file typically lies with those supporting to keep the file in the first place. Per c:COM:PCP, even a "significant doubt" about the freedom of the file warrants its deletion. Personally I'm on the fence about the freedom of the album cover, and I don't feel confident in giving my opinion one way or the other about it. ―Howard • 🌽33 21:59, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- I've nominated this for deletion at Commons. I hope that this leads to a strong source establishing that the image is out of copyright becoming available, but if not there are some risks around Commons hosting this image that need to be considered by the community there. Nick-D (talk) 10:09, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
