Oceans cover 70% of Earth\u2019s surface. But there\u2019s still so much we don\u2019t understand about oceans, from seafloor topography to what surface conditions are like in a certain part of the world at any given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One problem is size: It\u2019s expensive, impractical, and fuel-intensive to have many manned ships roaming the oceans. That\u2019s why Saildrone<\/a> is building a fleet of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) to constantly monitor the conditions of the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powered by wind and solar, each Saildrone carries 20 scientific sensors that can measure things like water temperature changes, wildlife activity, CO2<\/sub> concentration, and pollution. Saildrones can stay out at sea for months \u2014 or even years \u2014 without needing maintenance. And when they do require maintenance, the drones simply guide themselves back to port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long-term vision of Saildrone is to be able to measure every aspect of the oceans\u2019 health \u2014 from pollution to fish populations \u2014 in real time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
