{"id":115993,"date":"2025-05-01T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/?post_type=ftm_article&#038;p=115993"},"modified":"2025-05-12T09:18:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T13:18:46","slug":"space-based-solar-power-aetherflux","status":"publish","type":"ftm_article","link":"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/space\/space-based-solar-power-aetherflux","title":{"rendered":"The billionaire building space lasers to power Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Armed with a freshly raised Series A round of $50 million, billionaire Baiju Bhatt wants to move from Wall Street to space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The co-founder of stock-trading platform Robinhood and son of a NASA scientist, Bhatt announced his new company, Aetherflux, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/aetherflux.medium.com\/allow-me-to-re-introduce-myself-3fb63b633d33\">fall of 2024<\/a>, and the startup\u2019s goal is straight out of sci-fi: harvest solar power closer to the source, gathering it from the heavens and beaming it back down to Earth via laser.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aetherflux wants to move fast, too. Credit: Aetherflux<\/figcaption><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bhatt and Aetherflux are part of a constellation of academic, government, and private efforts to get solar power from orbit to Earth, an idea that\u2019s been kicking around since author Isaac Asimov first floated it in 1941.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent strides in research labs, the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/space\/reusable-rockets\">reusable rockets<\/a>, and new support from space agencies may finally make space-based solar power a reality, but the difficulties are still very real \u2014 NASA itself threw some cold water on the idea in a January 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/otps-sbsp-report-final-tagged-approved-1-8-24-tagged-v2.pdf?emrc=744da1\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found that the space-based solar power designs \u2026 are 12 to 80 times more expensive than if you were going to have renewable energy on the ground,\u201d Erica Rodgers, the report\u2019s author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JnGXA-BJBGY\">told attendees<\/a> at the 2024 AIAA SciTech Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, supporters of the idea believe that NASA\u2019s conclusion is based on outdated assumptions and that advancements in technology and cheaper launches make their vision more achievable than ever before. Bhatt wants to lead the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-closer-to-the-source\">Closer to the source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a way, pursuing space-based solar power seems like a no-brainer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun is a dynamo, radiating enough energy in a single hour to power our entire planet, and the cost of harvesting that energy has dropped dramatically in recent years \u2014 today, solar is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/renewables\/solar-pv\">cheapest option<\/a> for generating new electricity on the utility-scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are inherent challenges that limit our ability to take advantage of solar power. Sunlight is not available 24\/7, wanes due to the very tilt of the planet, and some regions do not receive enough of it ever to make solar a truly viable option. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/energy\/renewable-energy-storage\">Storing solar power<\/a> to be used later has proven difficult and expensive, as is transporting it from sunnier locations to shadier ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While researchers are working on overcoming those challenges, some simply can\u2019t be fixed through engineering \u2014 not if we\u2019re trying to harvest solar power from <em>Earth<\/em>, anyway. In orbit, though, the sun is always shining. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To take full advantage of the new power source, though, we need it to be cost-effective and reliable, and other successful experiments have been moving the ball forward on those fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2023, researchers from Swansea University in Wales and the University of Surrey in England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surrey.ac.uk\/news\/solar-farms-space-are-possible-say-surrey-and-swansea\">shared an update<\/a> on a satellite they\u2019d equipped with a new kind of light, efficient, and economical solar panel. While the power cells\u2019 output did decrease in the six years since the satellite\u2019s launch, the fact that they were still working at all serves as a proof-of-concept for affordable space-based solar power, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in 2024, Queen\u2019s University Belfast and UK company Space Solar successfully demonstrated 360-degree power-beam steering in a simulated space environment \u2014 a critical step toward building a satellite that can always face the sun and yet still beam energy to Earth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aetherflux-s-approach\">Aetherflux\u2019s approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aetherflux\u2019s approach to space-based solar power is unique in the field. Rather than targeting large Earth-based receivers with microwaves, its plan is to use infrared lasers to send solar energy from an array of small satellites \u2014 rather than a more expensive and ponderous to build and test larger satellite \u2014 to a series of small ground stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAetherflux is using lasers and optics to create a power grid in space for demand anywhere on Earth,\u201d Andrew Yarmola, head of engineering at Aetherflux, told Freethink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For their planned 2026 demonstration launch, the startup has purchased a satellite bus from LA-based Apex Space and booked a rideshare on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Aetherflux is building the payload for the satellite, which includes the telescope, pointing mechanism, optical equipment, and laser system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of our core technologies is the ability to provide power to a relatively small receiver,\u201d said Yarmola. The optical sensors and other subsystems allow them to achieve this, and using lasers instead of microwaves means they can not only achieve a higher power density, but also aim at smaller spots on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Aetherflux: Delivering Energy to Planet Earth\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tpuK7cjALzs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is using mostly off-the-shelf parts for this first satellite, and Yarmola told Freethink that a major challenge will be ensuring the system can withstand the temperature of its environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The satellite will have to deal with the heat from direct sunlight, from sunlight reflected off the Earth, the Earth\u2019s own emitted heat, and the thermal emission to deep space, and like the tires on a Formula 1 car, keeping everything at the right temperature will be crucial to performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of the system components need to be kept within a tight thermal range,\u201d said Yarmola. \u201cBalancing heaters and heat radiators will be a key challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to building the satellite\u2019s payload, Bhatt told TechCrunch that Aetherflux is also building the ground station that will receive the power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it has not chosen a location yet, he said that the startup is considering military sites because of the more controlled airspace. This first station will be stationary, but ultimately Aetherflux wants to build smaller ones, around 16 to 32 feet in diameter, that can be moved around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;The stakes couldn\u2019t be higher.&#8221;<\/p><cite>David Steitz<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the airspace benefits, building on a military site first would also make sense given that Aetherflux has received an undisclosed amount of funding from the Department of Defense to develop space-based solar power for the US military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpace solar power represents a strategic military advantage that can transform military operations,\u201d Bhatt <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BaijuBhatt\/status\/1894188569553522894\">tweeted<\/a> on February 24. \u201cBy delivering reliable energy, day or night, in contested environments, we can protect warfighter lives, safeguard military assets, and save taxpayer money that would otherwise be at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military advantage afforded by space-based solar power is just one reason the US is eager to tap into it before any other nation, but beating China to the tech is going to be tough. The global superpower is currently aiming to place a kilometer-wide solar station in geostationary orbit in 2030, a plan so ambitious it\u2019s been called the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilitymag.com\/articles\/chinas-1km-solar-array-the-manhattan-project-of-energy\">Manhattan Project of energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe stakes couldn\u2019t be higher,\u201d David Steitz, NASA\u2019s former deputy chief technologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/america-must-win-the-race-for-space-solar-power-or-buy-it-from-china\/\">wrote in 2024<\/a>. \u201cEnergy represents roughly 10% of global GDP. Whoever masters space solar power gains not just energy independence but potential control over a multi-trillion-dollar market that will define the next era of space operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re committed to working with the US Government to deliver this emerging technology. This is just the start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Baiju Bhatt<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The US military might be the first recipient of Aetherflux\u2019s space-based power (assuming it can overcome the challenges to harnessing it), but Yarmola told Freethink that the startup\u2019s ultimate goal is far bigger: it wants to be a commercially viable operation that can provide clean, affordable power to Americans everywhere, not just on the battlefield.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt a massive scale, space solar power can provide cheap and nearly continuous renewable energy, make the US energy dominant, balance our grid, deter enemies, and help during disasters,\u201d said Yarmola. \u201cI see our technology providing power during heat waves, frigid winters, and lightening the load on failing electrical infrastructure so it can be repaired before causing catastrophic damage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re committed to working with the US Government to deliver this emerging technology,\u201d Bhatt tweeted. \u201cThis is just the start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update, 5\/12\/25 9:20 am ET: <\/strong><em>This article was updates to clarify that JAXA was the first to send a significant amount of power wirelessly, not the first to send any power. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019d love to hear from you!
