You\u2019re still a few months away from graduating from college, but job offers are already rolling in. That\u2019s because you majored in renewable energy engineering\u2014making you a valuable commodity in the increasingly eco-conscious labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-green-jobs\"><strong>Green jobs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, the number of Gen Zers in the workforce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/email\/genz\/2024\/02\/2024-02-13d.html\">surpassed the number of Baby Boomers<\/a> for the first time, and for this younger generation, finding purpose-driven work at a company that values environmental sustainability is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/issues\/work\/content\/genz-millennialsurvey.html\">top priority<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucky for them, jobs that fit that description are among the fastest growing in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"continue\">For this week\u2019s Future Explored, we\u2019re taking a look back at the revolution that triggered our current climate crisis, the generation with a strong will to fix it, and the labor market \u201cmacrotrends\u201d that could help them do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-we-ve-been\">Where we\u2019ve been<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\u201ccontinue\u201d>Humans have been polluting the environment to some extent for as long as we\u2019ve been around\u2014even a small campfire releases carbon into the atmosphere\u2014but the Industrial Revolution took it to a whole new level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the number of factories in cities increased, the air quality in them plummeted, and local waterways became polluted by a combination of industrial waste and sewage from all the people who\u2019d left their farms to move into the cities for work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groups like the Coal Smoke Abatement Society formed to protest these conditions, and before the end of the 1800s, a handful of environmental protection laws would be passed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/3825263\">Europe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyPURL.cgi?Dockey=P100DZYW.TXT\">Americas<\/a>. Transitioning from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to EVs is going to be necessary to meet our climate goals, and we\u2019re going to need people who know how to care for the vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to become one<\/strong>: The requirements to become an EV specialist vary by location\u2014some states require mechanics to have official certifications, while others don\u2019t, so it\u2019s possible you could find someone willing to give you an apprenticeship where you learn on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A more straightforward path to becoming an EV specialist would be to complete some formal training. This can range from a one-week \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/legacyev.com\/products\/ev-fundamentals-certification-bootcamp\">bootcamp<\/a>\u201d in EV fundamentals to a two-year <a href=\"https:\/\/franklincummings.edu\/academics\/academic-programs\/electric-vehicle-technology\/\">associate\u2019s degree<\/a> at a community college, and more training options are regularly emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, for example, Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/03\/26\/tesla-start-automotive-training-program\/\">announced<\/a> plans to partner with colleges across the U.S. for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/careers\/tesla-start\">Tesla START<\/a>, a 16-week program that teaches students the skills needed to become a technician at one of its service centers. More recently, the Community College of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania announced a one-year, tuition-free apprenticeship program that, in addition to classroom instruction, pairs students with local EV dealerships for paid on-the-job training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a first-in-the-nation program that we hope will be an example for the rest of the country as we continue to expand industries to ensure that we are not just building things, but we&#8217;re also protecting our clean air and our clean climate,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesa.fm\/development-transportation\/2024-11-01\/ccac-electric-vehicle-ev-technician-apprentice-program\">said<\/a> Julie Su, then-acting U.S. secretary of labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to become one<\/strong>: You\u2019re going to need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/architecture-and-engineering\/environmental-engineers.htm\">degree<\/a> to get a job as an environmental engineer, and for many positions, a bachelor\u2019s won\u2019t cut it\u2014you\u2019ll need to dedicate the time to earning your master\u2019s or even a doctoral degree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within an environmental engineering program, you\u2019ll typically have an opportunity to choose a specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing to focus on air pollution control, for example, would help prepare you for a career developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/energy\/carbon-capture-technology-electro-chemical\">carbon capture systems<\/a>, which filter greenhouse gasses out of factories\u2019 waste streams or pull them directly from the air and then store or repurpose them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specializing in water resources management, meanwhile, would give you the foundational knowledge needed to build systems that can help the world overcome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/artificial-intelligence\/water-scarcity-auctionomics\">water scarcity<\/a>, which is a problem expected to get worse in many parts of the world due to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-renewable-energy-engineers\">Renewable the burning of fossil fuels. If we can replace these systems with ones powered by renewable energy, we could eliminate the world\u2019s primary source of greenhouse gas emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to become one<\/strong>: You\u2019ll need a post-secondary degree for a career as a renewable energy engineer, too, and again, you can tailor your time in school to best prepare you for the specific career you want after you graduate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know you\u2019re going to want to design wind farms, you could opt to get your degree at a university that offers a minor in wind energy, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/coe\/academics\/minors\/wind.php\">Texas Tech<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/engineering\/minors\/minor-in-offshore-offshore-wind-energy\/\">University of Rhode Island<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in helping make renewables more reliable, you might want to take courses focused on building the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unr.edu\/degrees\/minors\/batteries-energy-storage\">next generations of battery systems<\/a> or ones that teach you how to <a href=\"https:\/\/online.stanford.edu\/courses\/xeiet237-transforming-grid-ai-renewables-storage-evs-and-prosumers\">use artificial intelligence<\/a> for better grid management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe path forward is pretty clear,\u201d Assaad Razzouk, CEO of renewable energy developer Gurin Energy, told Freethink. \u201cIt&#8217;s going to be overwhelmingly solar and batteries\u2026so naturally, solar storage, the tech around it, the AI around it, is probably the fastest growth area in terms of employment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;The energy industry is full of skilled talent, and that talent is transferable.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Assaad Razzouk<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-green-job-for-everyone\">A green job for everyone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These might be the fastest growing green jobs identified by the WEF, but they\u2019re far from the only ones. Solar panel installers, wind turbine technicians, and agricultural engineers are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.dol.gov\/2024\/04\/18\/celebrating-earth-month-the-outlook-for-green-jobs\">many others<\/a> expected to increase in demand as the world strives to meet its climate goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green jobs aren\u2019t just for Gen Z or people who\u2019ve always known they wanted a job saving the planet, either. Workers who\u2019ve already established themselves in industries known to contribute to the climate crisis can be particularly valuable contributors to the new green economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe energy industry is full of skilled talent, and that talent is transferable,\u201d Razzouk told Freethink. \u201cIf you&#8217;re an offshore oil and gas engineer, you&#8217;re not going to have a hard time transitioning to onshore wind or solar or even batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;No matter your skill, you are needed in the field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Georgia Welford-Tuitt<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019ve already finished your degree or started working in a field that doesn\u2019t seem directly transferable to work combating climate change, chances are there\u2019s someone in the environmental movement who could use your skill set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou [don\u2019t] need to have a master\u2019s degree or to have studied environmental science to be active in this,\u201d Georgia Welford-Tuitt, a Gen Z advisor at the Climate and Mental Health Network, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/storyworks\/the-climate-and-us\/gcha-gen-z-mental-health\">told BBC StoryWorks<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo matter your skill, you are needed in the field,\u201d she continued. \u201cEvery movement needs an accountant, a writer, and someone who can take a powerful photograph.
