Throughout the day, you converse with a powerful AI assistant that uses the specs to pepper your view with useful information, seamlessly merging your physical and digital worlds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-smart-glasses-era-nbsp\">The smart glasses era&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1990s, mobile phones could make calls or text, and PCs (with a modem) could send email, surf the internet, or play games. The following decade combined them and gave birth to the smartphone \u2014 changing practically everything about how we navigate the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smart <em>glasses<\/em> that combine personal computing, AI, and augmented reality could be the next life-changing consumer tech device. This helps wearers avoid being stigmatized as modern-day \u201cGlassholes\u201d trying to film others without their consent (even if it doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/13\/technology\/personaltech\/meta-ray-ban-glasses.html\"><em>actually<\/em> stop this from happening<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the smart glasses market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/Market-Reports\/ar-glass-market-130690160.html\">growing<\/a>, there\u2019s still no guarantee the devices will ever become mainstream, let alone replace smartphones as our go-to personal electronics. The industry is still searching for its \u201ckiller app,\u201d the feature that people just can\u2019t get without the tech \u2014 and this might be the one thing Google got <em>right <\/em>about smart glasses with Google Glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Google Project Glass: Official Concept Walkthrough Video, &quot;One Day&quot; [HD]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5R1snVxGNVs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Epson released its smart glasses in 2011, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J3iLsKerpq0\">marketed<\/a> the devices as being for \u201cpersonal media enjoyment\u201d \u2014 put on a pair, and you can browse the web or watch movies wherever you are \u2014 but Google\u2019s 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5R1snVxGNVs&amp;t\">concept video<\/a> for Glass emphasized a very different kind of use case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than providing passive entertainment, these smart glasses were going to be <em>helpful<\/em>. They\u2019d send you text notifications, help you keep track of your schedule, and overlay useful graphics, such as walking directions, onto your field of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital assistant in the Google Glass devices that actually shipped was nowhere near as useful \u2014 reviewers reported getting frustrated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-switch\/wp\/2014\/04\/29\/my-awkward-week-with-google-glass\/\">buggy software<\/a>, which often misunderstood what they said or wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, far better AI assistants are now a reality, thanks to advances in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/robots-ai\/what-is-generative-ai\">generative AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s easy to envision a future where people could have an expert AI assistant by their side through a phone, glasses, or other next-generation devices.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Greg Wayne<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the release of the hugely popular ChatGPT in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/technology\/2024-05-26\/generative-ai-digs-the-graves-of-traditional-search-engines-and-virtual-assistants.html\">seemingly every tech company<\/a> has started trying to figure out how to use generative AI to create the <em>ultimate<\/em> digital assistant, and many of these AIs, including Meta\u2019s offering, are already being <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/04\/new-ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-styles-and-meta-ai-updates\/\">integrated<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/solosglasses.com\/blogs\/news\/these-chatgpt-powered-solos-smart-glasses-just-eliminated-the-language-barrier-at-ces-2024-nbsp-laptopmag-airgo%E2%84%A23\">into<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/robots-ai\/frame-ai\">smart glasses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[S]mart glasses are very powerful for AI because, unlike having it on your phone, glasses, as a form factor, can see what you see and hear what you hear from your perspective,\u201d Meta Founder Mark Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23889057\/mark-zuckerberg-meta-ai-elon-musk-threads-quest-interview-decoder\">told the Verge<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google hasn\u2019t given up on the future it predicted in the Glass concept video, either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024, Google DeepMind released a demo video in which its in-development AI assistant, <a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.google\/technologies\/gemini\/project-astra\/\">Project Astra<\/a>, is used with a pair of smart glasses that Greg Wayne, research director at Google Deepmind and Project Astra lead, told Freethink are a \u201cfunctional research prototype\u201d from the company\u2019s AR team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversal AI agents have the potential to positively impact many aspects of day-to-day life, from enabling the visually impaired to translating languages fluidly to providing real-time information about the physical world,\u201d said Wayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDepending on the use case,\u201d he continued, \u201cit\u2019s easy to envision a future where people could have an expert AI assistant by their side through a phone, glasses, or other next-generation devices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Project Astra: Our vision for the future of AI assistants\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nXVvvRhiGjI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Astra isn\u2019t available to the public yet, and the advanced AI assistants that are available, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/robots-ai\/meta-ai\">Meta AI<\/a>, aren\u2019t reliable enough to be indispensable \u2014 sometimes they\u2019ll return useful answers to your questions, and sometimes they\u2019ll confidently tell you that the potato you\u2019re holding <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Uuy_T4YrrjM?si=JQcTN6RSH40CB4CO&amp;t=197\">is a smartphone<\/a>. Often, you won\u2019t really know if it\u2019s right without looking it up on your phone, anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This habit of presenting false information as true, or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/robots-ai\/ai-hallucinations\">hallucinating<\/a>,\u201d is a major problem with generative AIs, and how to solve it \u2014 if it even is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/04\/are-language-models-doomed-to-always-hallucinate\/\">solvable<\/a> \u2014 is still TBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if we do end up with super-advanced AI assistants, there\u2019s no guarantee people will prefer interacting with AI through something new, like smart glasses (or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/consumer-tech\/humanes-wearable\">pin<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/robots-ai\/rabbit-r1\">bright orange box<\/a>), over the phones we\u2019re already using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we still need to carry around a smartphone in order to engage with the AI \u2014 as you do to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/smart-glasses\/compatible-devices\/\">Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses<\/a> \u2014 it limits the potential value of carrying around another device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best form factor for advanced AI assistants will ultimately be determined as researchers, designers, users, and the wider field explore different use cases,\u201d said Wayne. \u201cAt this stage, it is too early to predict what that hardware will be, but it&#8217;s an exciting time for innovation, collaboration, and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If today\u2019s AIs don\u2019t end up leading to tomorrow\u2019s uber-helpful digital assistants, smart glasses developers will <em>definitely<\/em> need to figure out another killer app that gets people buying their devices \u2014 which brings us back to Epson and the very first smart glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;To get to that future, where AR\/VR headsets eventually replace our everyday devices, we need to make the transition easier.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Tamir Berliner<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While some smart glasses makers are banking on people wanting to use their specs to interact with advanced AIs, others are trying to lure in customers by emphasizing how the glasses can replace screens for both entertainment and work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic technology has come a long way since 2011, and the smart glasses these companies are selling are sleeker, with bigger virtual screens, higher image quality, and more functionality than Epson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2012\/03\/28\/epson-gets-in-your-face-with-their-android-powered-moverio-glasses\/\">Moverio BT-100s<\/a>, but they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/consumer-tech\/nimo-smart-glasses\">typically<\/a> aren\u2019t useful on their own \u2014 you need additional tech, such as a laptop or a smartphone and a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make it easier for people to make the leap to using smart glasses over standard screens,&nbsp;tech startup Sightful created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightful.com\/\">Spacetop<\/a>, a screen-free laptop that comes with a pair of modified Xreal Air 2 Pro smart glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe reduced [the glasses\u2019] weight to 84 grams, modernized its design to resemble everyday sunglasses, and \u2026 added automatic dimming,\u201d Tamir Berliner, Sightful\u2019s co-founder and CEO, told Freethink. \u201cWe also worked with Xreal on modifications for the text rendering pipeline in order to improve text legibility and reduce eye strain, further allowing a full day of productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure it\u2019s too soon to say whether it\u2019ll be popular enough to start a new trend of smart glasses as part of all-in-one computing systems, but Berliner thinks his company\u2019s approach could help people get comfortable looking at the world from behind high-tech specs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo get to that future, where AR\/VR headsets eventually replace our everyday devices, we need to make the transition easier,\u201d he told Freethink. \u201cThat\u2019s why we believe that Spacetop\u2019s form factor of a laptop keyboard with a spatial \u2018screen\u2019 is the next natural evolution of
