You\u2019re at your doctor\u2019s office, and you just tested positive for that disease that killed your uncle. It might even improve the success rate of drugs that reach clinical trials \u2014 today, 90% of them fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout AlphaFold, a chemist would have to rely more heavily on experimental crystallography or CryoEM to obtain a single structure, which can take months or even years, or use an existing structure with a different small molecule as a template for design, which would not capture the subtle but crucial changes in structure with different molecules,\u201d Max Jaderberg, chief AI officer at Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery company spun out of DeepMind in 2021, told Freethink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow, with AlphaFold 3, we understand more about how proteins implicated in disease interact with other elements of the cell to design drug molecules to modulate their function,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isomorphic is wasting no time in putting AlphaFold 3 to use, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in 2024, it announced that it had inked multi-million dollar deals to help two major pharmaceutical companies \u2014 Eli Lilly and Novartis \u2014 discover treatments for multiple undisclosed diseases. It is developing its own drugs internally, too, and while it hasn\u2019t unveiled those targets either, Jaderberg told Freethink that the company is focused on oncology and immunology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Protein folding explained\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KpedmJdrTpY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>AlphaFold 3 might not have as great of an impact on drug discovery as it could, though, due to how Google DeepMind is restricting its use: While the company released the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google-deepmind\/alphafold\">source code<\/a> for AlphaFold 2, allowing others to use the tool for their own research, even if it was commercial, it did not initially open source AlphaFold 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, it made the AI available to researchers through the AlphaFold Server, which prohibits commercial use and limits which molecules users can experiment with and how many predictions they can make per day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a financial standpoint, this decision makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AlphaFold 2 was released before the announcement of Isomorphic Labs, and if Google DeepMind\u2019s goal is to start making money through drug discovery, giving away the latest version of the tech its commercial venture is built upon probably wouldn\u2019t be the best idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to strike a balance between making sure that this [AlphaFold 3] is accessible and has the impact in the scientific community as well as not compromising Isomorphic\u2019s ability to pursue commercial drug discovery,\u201d Pushmeet Kohli, Google DeepMind\u2019s head of AI science, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-01383-z\">told Nature<\/a> on May 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Google DeepMind AlphaFold Server Demo\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NSOz8B046m0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific community was not happy that the code was withheld, though \u2014 soon after the publication of a paper on AlphaFold 3 in the journal Nature, several researchers shared an <a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/records\/11206103\">open letter<\/a> decrying the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter garnered hundreds of signatures, and on May 13, Jaderberg <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/maxjaderberg\/status\/1790086549205401947\">tweeted<\/a> that Google DeepMind was working to release the AlphaFold 3 code within six months for academic use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By that time, though, researchers might already have access to the tool for <em>any<\/em> kind of use \u2014 according to Sergey Ovchinnikov, an evolutionary biologist at MIT, Google DeepMind included enough details in its Nature paper that others might be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-01555-x\">recreate the system<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would expect open-source solutions before the end of the year,\u201d Ovchinnikov told Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;By 2040, we hope to see a number of new drugs that have been designed with AI reaching patients.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Max Jaderberg<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the scientific community might just always be a little behind Isomorphic from now on, in terms of access to the latest version of AlphaFold. However, that won\u2019t matter if the AI\u2019s predictions don\u2019t hold up when tested on real cells, real compounds, and most importantly in clinical trials, which currently take about 5-6 years on average (though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/health\/clinical-trials-llms\">AI<\/a> could be speeding those up, too).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means we likely won\u2019t know for several years whether AlphaFold 3 is an improvement on traditional approaches to drug discovery \u2014 but if it is, we could be witnessing the birth of a new era in medicine, one where we genuinely have Google to thank for keeping us healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy 2040, we hope to see a number of new drugs that have been designed with AI reaching patients,\u201d said Jaderberg. \u201cAlphaFold 3 is a critical stepping stone towards that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019d love to hear from you!
