You can get stories like this one straight to your inbox every Thursday morning by&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/its-the-news-reimagined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>subscribing here<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new NASA report found that space-based solar power \u2014 a futuristic concept pulled from the pages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/SOLARIS\/SBSP_history\">science fiction<\/a> \u2014 is likely too expensive to work, but it also lays out exactly what would need to change to make it a viable source of clean energy in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The challenge:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/energy\/solar-power-growth\">Solar power<\/a> is a revolutionary weapon in the battle against climate change. Every hour, enough solar energy hits Earth to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucdavis.edu\/climate\/definitions\/how-is-solar-power-generated\">power the entire world<\/a> for a year, and the cost of harnessing this energy with solar panels has fallen exponentially in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that solar energy isn\u2019t consistent or evenly distributed. Solar panels can\u2019t generate electricity at night, of course, but sunlight also varies greatly across the seasons of the year. Researchers are still trying to figure out the most cost-effective way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/energy\/renewable-energy-storage\">store excess solar power<\/a> for later use. Batteries are still expensive and can only store a few hours or days of energy at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some places can\u2019t rely on solar power because they simply don\u2019t receive enough sunlight year-round, and it\u2019s surprisingly hard to build long-distance transmission lines to move electricity from sunnier places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>At a high enough orbit, space-based solar power stations would never experience \u201cnight.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Space-based solar power:<\/strong> Instead of collecting the sun\u2019s energy on the ground, it may be possible to harvest it <em>in space<\/em> using satellites. We could then send this solar energy to terrestrial receivers in the form of concentrated microwaves or laser beams for conversion into electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar energy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/SOLARIS\/Space-Based_Solar_Power_overview\">10 times more intense<\/a>, on average, above Earth\u2019s atmosphere than within it, so these satellites would be exposed to far more sunlight than terrestrial solar farms, and at a high enough orbit, they\u2019d never experience \u201cnight,\u201d either, eliminating solar\u2019s intermittency problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather wouldn\u2019t be an issue, as microwaves can travel right through clouds, and space-based solar power stations in high enough orbits could beam solar energy to essentially any location on the planet 24\/7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1202\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?quality=75\" alt=\"A group of people are working on a device in a lab.\" class=\"wp-image-100682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg 1202w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=320,213 320w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=600,399 600w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=1000,666 1000w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=1200,800 1200w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=330,220 330w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=540,359 540w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=850,566 850w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=175,116 175w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=275,183 275w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=400,266 400w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=360,240 360w, https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image_75da81.jpeg?resize=500,333 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1202px) 100vw, 1202px\" \/><div class=\"img-caption\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Caltech<\/figcaption><div class=\"img-caption__description\">Caltech&#8217;s space-based solar power experiment being prepared for launch. \n<\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists have been contemplating the idea of space-based solar power for decades, and in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2015-03-japan-space-scientists-wireless-energy.html\">JAXA scientists<\/a> proved that it is possible to wirelessly and accurately transmit energy as microwaves across a significant distance and then convert it into electricity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the distance was only 170 feet and the experiment took place on Earth, this was a win for proponents of space-based solar power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An even bigger win followed in March 2023, when Caltech scientists\u2019 Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1) became the first spacecraft to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/about\/news\/in-a-first-caltechs-space-solar-power-demonstrator-wirelessly-transmits-power-in-space\">wirelessly transmit solar energy<\/a> harvested in space to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Space Solar Power Demonstrator\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c2mgpMy-_mU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s new?<\/strong> The Caltech team has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/about\/news\/space-solar-power-project-ends-first-in-space-mission-with-successes-and-lessons\">wrapped up<\/a> the SSPD-1 experiment, which, in addition to wirelessly transmitting energy from space, also compared the performance of 32 types of solar cells and demonstrated a potential design for a solar energy-collecting spacecraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this research, the team has concluded that space-based solar power could <em>technically<\/em> work, but just isn\u2019t economical \u2014 yet. They took an optimistic read of the evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Solar power beamed from space at commercial rates, lighting the globe, is still a future prospect,\u201d said Caltech President Thomas F. compete with terrestrial clean energy options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe compared it to wind, solar, [and] fission \u2014 all on the ground \u2014 and we found that these systems are 12 to 80 times more expensive,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JnGXA-BJBGY\">said<\/a> Erica Rodgers, who leads the science and technology partnership forum in NASA\u2019s Office of the Chief Technologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The backlash: <\/strong>While proponents of space-based solar power have <a href=\"https:\/\/spacefrontier.org\/2024\/01\/19\/sff-press-release-nasa-sbsp-report\/\">expressed gratitude<\/a> that NASA chose to create this report, they\u2019ve also questioned the numbers the agency used for its predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems to be driven entirely by a wide variety of assumptions that are, in combination, the worst possible of the worst possible cases from years ago,\u201d John Mankins, who led a NASA study of space-based solar power in the late 1990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/nasa-report-offers-pessimistic-take-on-space-based-solar-power\/\">told Space News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;[NASA&#8217;s report] stopped short of a thorough examination of the real costs and promise of space-based solar power technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><em>Sean Mahoney<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the report assumes a launch cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/nasa-too-down-space-based-solar-power\">$1,000 per kilogram<\/a> using SpaceX\u2019s in-development <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/space\/spacex-starship-96366\">Starship<\/a> rocket, but SpaceX hopes to achieve a cost of $200\/kilogram, and ESA uses a range of $300-$500\/kilogram in its own estimates for future space-based solar power systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA\u2019s report is also based on the use of Starship rockets to carry the hardware all the way up to geostationary orbit, which will require refueling in space. A slower but far cheaper option would be to use Starship to get the tech to low-Earth orbit and then have solar-powered space tugs pull it the rest of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile NASA\u2019s report was generally encouraging, it stopped short of a thorough examination of the real costs and promise of space-based solar power technology,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/spacefrontier.org\/2024\/01\/19\/sff-press-release-nasa-sbsp-report\/\">said<\/a> Sean Mahoney, executive director of the Space Frontier Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Looking ahead: <\/strong>In the report, NASA does lay out a roadmap for space-based solar power to become cost-competitive with terrestrial sources of clean energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to $500\/kg launch costs and the use of space tugs to pull hardware from low-Earth orbit to geostationary orbit, we\u2019d also need to extend the assumed lifetime of the hardware from the current 10 years to 15 years, find cheaper ways to service and dispose of the tech, and efficiently manufacture the hardware at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those advances won\u2019t happen overnight, but they also aren\u2019t impossible to imagine, and while NASA doesn\u2019t have any concrete plans to test space-based solar power, seemingly every other major space agency has something on the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThis is a paradigm-shifting capability that could open up entirely new industries we cannot even dream up yet.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Kate Stambaugh<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, ESA began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/SOLARIS\/SOLARIS_activity_plan\">SOLARIS initiative<\/a> to assess the concept\u2019s feasibility and mature the tech needed to make it commercially viable \u2014 its goal is to launch a demonstrator satellite in 2030, followed by a pilot solar power plant in 2035 and a commercial-scale plant in 2040.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in 2022, China <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/china-aims-for-space-based-solar-power-test-in-leo-in-2028-geo-in-2030\/\">announced plans<\/a> to use its Tiangong space station to test space-based solar power tech \u2014 its goal is to transmit energy to Earth in 2028. JAXA, meanwhile, recently announced its intention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/japan-will-try-to-beam-solar-power-from-space-by-2025-214338244.html\">beam solar energy<\/a> from space to Earth in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Space Solar Power Incremental Demonstrations and Research Project (SSPIDR)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sKKtrWTDusA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is also taking a close look at space-based solar power, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/northrop-grumman-tests-space-solar-power\/\">awarding<\/a> Northrop Grumman a $100 million contract to demonstrate the tech in 2025. Its hope is to use it to power remote, off-grid military bases, but the research could help advance the sci-fi energy source for civilians, too, so whether or not it becomes a major, industrial-scale source of power, space-based solar could still find a niche.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe benefits of this technology are varied and far-reaching: disaster relief, powering remote sensors, reducing energy supply chain burdens, delivering solar power in bad weather or during the night, you name it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/life-at-northrop-grumman\/supercharged\">said<\/a> Kate Stambaugh, the project\u2019s integration and test lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a paradigm-shifting capability that could open up entirely new industries we cannot even dream up yet,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019d love to hear from you!
