The Sirius Business Jet, meanwhile, has room for three passengers and a pilot and a range of 1,150 miles \u2014 that\u2019s enough for a trip between New York and Miami. Both have a cruise speed of 323 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/vimeo.com\/eschercapital\/siriusjet\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the energy density of the liquid hydrogen system is greater than that of lithium-ion batteries, Sirius\u2019 range and speed is much greater than that of comparable eVTOLs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toyota-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/hard-tech\/flying-taxi\">Joby Aviation\u2019s in-development eVTOL<\/a>, for example, has a range of 150 miles and a top speed of 200 mph. An eVTOL made by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PeqQhrn3kn4?feature=shared\">Archer Aviation<\/a> \u2014 a partner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/transportation\/flying-cars-archer-aviation\">United Airlines<\/a> \u2014 maxes out at 100 miles and 150 mph. Both carry four passengers and a pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The cold water:<\/strong> The big difference between Sirius\u2019s hydrogen VTOL and those eVTOLs is that they\u2019ve actually proven capable of flight \u2014 Joby\u2019s prototype has racked up <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jobyaviation\/status\/1747732744140927033\">nearly 25,000 miles<\/a> in the air, in fact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA has also certified at least one eVTOL and one hydrogen plane as \u201cairworthy\u201d \u2014 Alef Aeronautics\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/transportation\/electric-flying-car\">Armada Model Zero<\/a> and Universal Hydrogen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hydrogen.aero\/press-releases\/universal-hydrogen-completes-first-taxi-tests-and-is-granted-experimental-airworthiness-certificate-by-the-federal-aviation-administration\/\">Dash 8-300<\/a>, respectively \u2014 but since Sirius\u2019 hydrogen VTOL is the first aircraft of its kind, there\u2019s no precedent for certification. That could potentially make it more time-consuming to get through the regulatory process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liquid hydrogen is also a quite novel fuel source for aircraft. Most in-development <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/transportation\/hydrogen-flights\">hydrogen planes<\/a> store the fuel in a gaseous form \u2014 the first piloted flight of a plane fueled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2fly.de\/2023\/09\/07\/h2fly-and-partners-complete-worlds-first-piloted-flight-of-liquid-hydrogen-powered-electric-aircraft\/\"><em>liquid<\/em> hydrogen<\/a> only just took place, in September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;We have funds, but not enough to do this fast.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Alexey Popov<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Looking ahead: <\/strong>Despite those challenges, Sirius has laid out an incredibly ambitious timeline for its jets, with the first test flights planned for 2025, followed by certification in 2026 and the launch of commercial services in 2028.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sirius\u2019 ability to secure funding will likely determine whether it has any chance of hitting those milestones \u2014 the startup has been funded internally to date, but is now looking for outside investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have funds, but not enough to do this fast,\u201d CEO Alexey Popov <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/system\/files\/market_briefings\/aam\/aam_01_03_2024.pdf\">told Aviation Week<\/a>. \u201cAnd the market is hot, so we want to move fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We&#8217;d love to hear from you!
